The inhabited centre is about 6 Km from the Mediterranean coast, and 5 Km. from the Prelitoral Catalana Mountain Range. There are 1.400 inhabitants, and it is at a height of 130 metres over the sea level. The weather is temperate. The Winter and Summer seasons are mild and good, and the days are shiny, clear and brightly. The most characteristic meteorological phenomena is the wind that blows from the Northwest, which is called "serè". It clears out the atmosphere, and turns it into a dark blue colour, very intensive and without any remains of pollution. COMMUNICATIONS

The traditional local economy is based on a rich agriculture, either irrigated or unirrigated crops. The most important crops are the olive tree, the vineyard, the almond and the carob tree, in the unirrigated lands. In the irrigated lands, there are some hazel and peach trees, some vegetables, and some other fruit trees. We have to point out the quality of the olive "virgen" oil, and the Moscatel wine. This wine is world known, and it is made of this kind of grapes. The poultry and the cattle breeding are also important. Another sector that has an influence in the local economy is the industry. There are some factories of blinds, furniture (order), metallurgy, PVC, of surgery materials, of fodder, of dressmaking, of fine leather works, graphical, wood toys, etc. There are some factories for transforming the agricultural products. There is an important group of people who work in liberal or crafts professions, in several aspects. Some of them work outside the village. GASTRONOMY Montbrió still offers some dishes of the ancient cook, although they are only supplied in reduced areas. Some of them can be considered as gastronomical relics. Between this rich variety of meals, we can mention some of the most known ones, as for example, the lettuce with "romesco", the "coca amb recapte", the rice in a "tros" pan, the Montbrió soup with "brosses", the "petaco", the "trampa" omelette, the "botifarrot", the "escalivada", the rabbit with sweet or hot snails, the broad beans with a sauce, "ofegades", or in the "gitano" style, the toast bread with tomatoes, the salt herring, and the sweet Moscatell grapes. With respect to the desserts, there are some excellent ones, as the
eggs or sugar "coques", the "bunyols de genoll",
the Santa Teresa toasts, the "menjar blanc", etc. We need to make a reference to the Montbrió Moscatell, very well known all over the world. It is a sweet wine that is made of the grapes of this name, and it is often drunk with the desserts (sweets of dry fruit). The olive oil is included in the "Denominació d'origen Siurana" (a quality mark). It has not a high degree of acidity, and it is of an insuperable quality. |
