The first historical remains belong to the Iberian Age. They are some coins and pieces of ceramics. The Romans also left some remains, which basically are pieces of amphora, ceramics, glasses, and jewels. The documented history firstly starts with the repopulation that was made after the reconquest made to the Muslims in the 12th.century. The population permit was obtained by the knight Guillem de Jorba between 1146 and 1171, and it was given by the Tarragona Archbishop Hug de Cervelló.
In 1622 Montbrió received the title of Village, and belonged to the Comuna del Camp until this was extincted in the 18th.century. From 1449 on, it was a "street" of Barcelona together with fifty more villages and cities of all over Catalunya. This represented and agreement for the protection of Montbrió by Barcelona by signing a "carreratge" deal, and also a set of important defend and commercial advantages. |

-Festa Major of Sant Antoni (3rd. Saturday of January) The village is very proud of its collection of giants. There are four couples of giants that belong to different suburbs of the village, as the Closa, D'Avall, of Sant Antoni, and of the Group of Colònies. Two of these couples belong to the reduced group of giants that are in a catalogue of the centenary giants of Catalunya. The first couple is the couple of the Closa Street, who represents a Moorish king and a Christian princess and was made in 1814. The second couple is the couple of the Avall Street, who represents a warrior king and the queen, and is 150 years old. All of the giants, together with a big group of "capgrossos" form the most important aspect of the Folklore in Montbrió. The feasts where they are shown are waited with expectation. They dance in the streets with the sounds of the popular songs played with "grallas" (a typical king of flute) by the Grup de Grallers de Montbrió. On New Year's Eve, the childhood uses to congratulate the year to the "padrinos", who give them the "guilandos". These presents are small baskets with lots of candies. |
